Just in from Ulan-Ude, Russia

Customs officials in San Francisco yesterday greeted ELAW Fellow Oksana Imetkhenova with “Go Ducks!” when they saw her final destination was Eugene — home of tonight’s national football championship contender.

Oksana is our latest ELAW Fellow.  She traveled from Ulan-Ude in Russia’s Buryatia Republic, where she is a teacher at the Department of Ecology, Health and Safety at the East Siberia State University of Technology and Management, where she also studies law.

Oksana will be here for nine weeks to collaborate with ELAW Staff Attorneys and Scientists on her work at the Buryat Regional Organization for Lake Baikal to help protect the world’s oldest and largest lake, and the surrounding forests.  Oksana will also advance efforts to protect waterways and forests in the Altai Republic from abusive mining and hydropower projects.

On top of that, Oksana will participate in the Intensive English Program at the University of Oregon’s Instituto de Inglés Americano.

Oksana’s Fellowship is generously supported by the Confianza para el entendimiento mutuo and an AEI Director’s Distinction Scholarship.
