Climate Justice for Latin America

Climate Justice Now!

Many nations are failing to meet the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) agreed to in the Paris Agreement’s long-term global temperature goals. ELAW is proud to announce the launch of a new collaboration with Chilean partners at Fiscalía del Medio Ambiente (FIMA) who are taking the lead in ensuring that more ambitious and progressive climate targets are met by nation states across Latin America.

“We are tackling the climate crisis head-on,” says Ezio Costa Cordella, FIMA Executive Director.

FIMA has a proven track record of successfully holding the Chilean government accountable to its NDC commitments through a combination of litigation and advocacy strategies, integrating climate goals into domestic law, and promoting public participation.

FIMA and ELAW will co-host a series of virtual workshops and provide one-on-one mentorship to grassroots advocates across Latin America who have the opportunity to learn from FIMA and advance their work at home.

“We aim to bridge the gap in using NDCs as tools to address both national climate policies and local environmental issues, and to equip environmental and human rights lawyers with the tools they need to integrate climate arguments into their work,” says Ezio.

FIMA will lead the development of a comprehensive “Digital Toolkit for Legal Advocates” while ELAW will contribute innovative legal strategies and scientific evidence to push for implementation of ambitious climate targets. Learnings will be shared globally through the ELAW Network, extending impact beyond Latin America.

We are excited to build collective power with FIMA and our partners, delivering scalable legal tools and fostering regional and global partnerships to advance climate justice around the world!
