Building the Movement
This Giving Tuesday, we hope you’ll consider supporting the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW). We collaborate with dedicated public interest lawyers in more than 80 countries worldwide to defend vital ecosystems and advance environmental justice.
ELAW collaborates with local partners on hundreds of cases every year. We are currently focusing on several critical areas of work:
Protecting Biodiversity
More than one million species are threatened with extinction due to human activities. We collaborate with lawyers working to challenge development projects that threaten wildlife and ecosystems. We help local advocates strengthen and enforce laws to better protect biodiversity.
Climate Justice
The damage that humans are doing to the global climate may be one of the gravest injustices of all time. Many communities suffering the most severe impacts of the climate crisis have contributed the least to the damage. People are turning to the courts to protect the rights of those impacted by the changing climate; implement adaptation measures; require governments to take bolder action to stop harmful emissions; evaluate climate impacts before approving projects; hold governments to their national and international climate commitments; and more.
Marine & Coastal Restoration
The ocean provides food, medicine, energy, jobs, and recreation and is the repository of tremendous biodiversity. We need a healthy ocean to stabilize the climate and avoid catastrophic climate damage, but the ocean is threatened by coastal development, pollution, overfishing, unsustainable aquaculture, mining, oil drilling, and more.
Defending Defenders
Our lawyer colleagues and their community partners are increasingly being attacked for defending human rights and the environment. We help improve our partners’ security and respond when they are threatened so they can continue their critical work. Keeping advocates in the battle helps ensure communities have a voice at the table and the tools they need to defend their rights and protect ecosystems.
Reining in Plastic Pollution
Adopting laws to reduce plastic pollution is a vital step to rein in the damage plastic pollution is doing to our communities, health, and environment. More than 40% of the plastic produced globally is used only once and then discarded. To address this crisis, we are working with local advocates to adopt and strengthen laws regulating all stages of the plastic life cycle, from production to disposal.
We must act now to protect a the Earth so it can support life as we know it.
Please make a gift today to support ELAW’s work providing legal and scientific tools and expertise to help communities around the world chart a path to a brighter future.
Sincerely,
Bern Johnson
