Malawi: Select plastic laws

 

Environment Management (Plastics) Regulations, 2015 (Malawi)

The regulations ban the import, manufacture, trade and commercial distribution of “plastics, plastic bags and plastic sheets made of plastic film with a wall thickness of less than sixty micrometres.” Art. 3.

The regulations exempt bread wrapping; wrap for fish, poultry, and meat; plastic bags for cooked food, fruits and nuts, confectionary products, liquid or frozen products, medicine, small hardware items, medicine, and veterinary products; dry cleaning bags; and bags for waste. Art. 4.

The thickness of bags must be printed on them in English and a local language. Art. 5(1). Recyclable plastic bags must be labeled as recyclable or reusable. Art. 5(2).
