Mexico: Select mangrove law

A variety of laws impact mangrove management and protection in Mexico. Some are highlighted below.

Ley General de Vida Silvestre  (General Wildlife Law) Art. 60 ter. (Prohibition of cutting, felling, filling mangroves).

Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, Protección ambiental -Especies nativas de flora y fauna silvestres - Categorías de riesgo y especificaciones para su inclusión, exclusión o cambio. Lista de especies en  riesgo    (Mexican Standard for the environmental protection of native species, list of species on risk). Annex III (mangrove enlisted as protected species).

Código Penal Federal (Federal Penal Code) Art. 420 bis. (Penalty of two to ten years in prison and for the equivalent of three hundred to three thousand days a fine will be imposed, who unlawfully damage, drain or fill wetlands, mangroves, lagoons, estuaries, or swamps).

NORMA Oficial Mexicana NOM-022-SEMARNAT-2003, Que establece las especificaciones para la preservación, conservación, aprovechamiento sustentable y restauración de los humedales costeros en zonas de manglar. (Mexican Standard which establishes the specifications for the preservation, conservation, sustainable use and restoration of coastal wetlands in mangrove areas.)
