Irene Fugara returned home to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, last month. Dar is Africa’s third fastest growing city.
“We struggle with polluting industries and poor waste management,” says Irene, Staff Attorney at the Lawyers’ Environmental Action Team.
During her ELAW Fellowship, Irene learned about model waste management laws and practices around the world, and explored how Lane County treats solid waste and wastewater.
Irene wrote to us yesterday, reflecting on one of her field trips:
“I was inspired by Eugene’s regional wastewater treatment. Here at home, I am raising awareness with communities, local government institutions, responsible authorities, and the central government on the best ways to avoid water-born diseases and other health problems that face our city.”
For decades, ELAW has collaborated with LEAT to hold polluting industries accountable. We will keep you informed of our work.
