Czech Advocate Joins ELAW as Killian O. Doherty Environmental Justice Fellow
We are pleased to announce that David Chytil will work with our team as this year’s Killian O. Doherty Environmental Justice Fellow.
David is an early-career environmental and human rights lawyer with broad interdisciplinary experience in academia, NGOs, government, and climate activism. For three years, he has been in the leadership of the Czech Climate Litigation, an association advancing the first strategic climate case against the Czech state.
During his time at the Centre for Climate Law and Sustainability Studies at the Czech Academy of Sciences, David delved deeper into corporate responsibility for climate change, culminating in an award-winning diploma thesis titled “Corporate responsibility and human rights: A way forward for climate litigation?” He co-organized a student conference on climate justice and co-edited a subsequent collective monograph. David also enjoys sharing knowledge and empowering younger generations. He is a lecturer in climate law and corporate power at Discover Summer Academy.

The Killian O. Doherty Environmental Justice Fellowship will fund David as he gains international experience by collaborating with the ELAW Team to research a broad range of topics requested by our partners, which may include comparative legal research on climate litigation, transboundary advocacy and litigation in Europe, energy law, and environmental impact assessment law. ELAW partners are working on diverse topics in their communities, including cases to protect the climate, rein in pollution, and defend the ocean and forests.
This month, David joined a Czechia-based law firm Lex regen, which focuses on regeneration law, rights of nature, and other innovative legal solutions to environmental problems. He is eager to apply the learning from his Killian Fellowship to the Czech context. David also expects to continue his climate advocacy work with Czech Climate Litigation.
“This experience will be invaluable for my further career in environmental law,” says David, “particularly in working on strategic cases and supporting affected communities.”
Many thanks to the Doherty Family and all those whose generous support helped make this Killian Fellowship possible!
