Welcome ELAW Fellow Damaris Santana

Join us in extending a warm welcome to new ELAW Fellow Damaris Santana from Mexico!

Damaris is an environmental lawyer at Instituto de Derecho Ambiental (IDEA), based in Guadalajara. This award-winning organization has taken the lead in efforts to protect Lake Chapala, Mexico’s largest freshwater lake and a critical water supply for the region.

Lake Chapala is under siege from polluting industries, agricultural run-off, and over-appropriation of water for industrial use — shortchanging residents and visitors. IDEA has worked tirelessly, for decades, to make community voices heard in efforts to protect the watershed.

Damaris will work with ELAW to protect Lake Chapala and ecosystems across Jalisco State.  She will also study English at the University of Oregon’s American English Instutute (AEI).

Many thanks to AEI for providing Damaris with a Director’s Distinction Scholarship.
