Impacted community members and the lawyers representing them underscore that for over a decade, a devastating cycle of impunity has shielded powerful corporations in Brazil from the consequences of their actions that have resulted in vast environmental destruction and the loss of many lives. In their view, the lack of initial accountability following the Mariana Dam disaster directly paved the way for future tragedies, including the catastrophic 2019 Brumadinho Dam failure, which claimed 272 lives. As ELAW partner Danilo Chammas, a human rights lawyer at Instituto Cordilheira, stated on the steps of the courthouse: \u201cWe have broken the cycle of impunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This triumph belongs to the victims&#8217; families and local communities who have tirelessly demanded accountability, supported by attorneys from the Human Rights Litigation team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.institutocordilheira.org.br\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.institutocordilheira.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instituto Cordilheira<\/a>. ELAW has been proud to stand with these lawyers, providing resources on corporate criminal liability to support their fight for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we celebrate this monumental step forward, our collective work is far from finished. The defendants will undoubtedly appeal, and advocates continue to advance legal battles against further mining expansion in the region.
