Join us in welcoming Olena Kravchenko and Flaviano Bianchini, who arrived this week from Ukraine and Italy to participate in ELAW Fellowships.
Olena is the Executive Director at Environment People Law (EPL), Ukraine's leading environmental law organization. Olena is here for ten weeks to collaborate with ELAW staff on EPL's work protecting communities and the environment in Ukraine. Olena will also study English at the University of Oregon's American English Institute and participate in the 2011 Public Interest Environmental Law Conference.
Flaviano is here for two weeks to prepare for work in Pucallpa, Peru, where indigenous communities face threats from oil development in the Amazon.
Flaviano is a scientist with field experience monitoring extractive industries in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Peru and Argentina. He will collaborate with ELAW partners at Derecho, Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (DAR) to ensure that local communities have a voice in decisions about oil development near Cordillera Azul National Park.
For 20 years, the ELAW Fellowship Program has welcomed hundreds of grassroots advocates to Eugene for individually tailored opportunities to collaborate and build skills to better protect communities and the environment through law.
Special thanks to the Trust for Mutual Understanding for supporting Olena's fellowship, and to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for supporting ELAW's work protecting biodiversity in Peru.
